Now, if you love the Nintendo Switch but don’t want to bring it with you all the time, you might be interested to learn that there is a new Switch emulator available for Android called Yuzu. Yuzu is not the first Switch emulator to launch on Android. Prior to this, there was another emulator called Skyline Emulator that was in development, but it was ultimately cancelled as the developers expressed their concern over potential legal risks.

For now, Yuzu appears to be forging ahead with their plans, but it should be noted that the emulator is currently in early access release, which means that there might be bugs and issues that haven’t been sorted out yet. Also, there might be some compatibility issues although the developers claim that users will need to own a device with at least a Snapdragon 865 or newer and a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

Also, there might be glitches with the graphics for some games, as XDA noted when they tested Animal Crossing New Horizons. Either way, if you’re looking for a way to play Switch games on your Android phone, Yuzu could be an emulator worth checking out.

Geekom A7

The Geekom A7 is a mini PC that is powered by Intel’s Ryzen 7000 series of processors. The base model will come with the Ryzen 7 7840HS, but in case you need a bit more processing power, you have the option of configuring it with the more powerful Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU.

While processing power is important, RAM is also just as important and for users who need a copious amount of RAM, the A7 is configurable to pack up to 64GB of DDR5 5,600MHz RAM. It also features support for NVMe SSD storage of up to 512GB, so if you need to be able to read and write files quickly to the computer, then this SSD will come in handy.

Now, for such a small PC, some of you might be concerned that in the graphics department, the A7 will take a hit. Granted, at its size it won’t be able to pack a full-sized GPU, but it does come with AMD’s Radeon Graphics 780M. This is an integrated GPU that comes with 12 CUs clocked at 2700MHz for the 7840HS processor, and 2800MHz for the 7940HS processor.

This means that users will be able to enjoy things like modern day games at moderate settings, as well as run professional applications if they need to get a bit of work done. In fact, thanks to the integrated graphics, if you have a multi-monitor setup, the Geekom A7 will actually be able to support up to four 4K displays.

Other features of the PC include support for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and there will be an array of ports for a wide variety of connectivity options. Last but not least, it will come with Windows 11 Pro preinstalled so you’re good to go right out of the box.

Geekom APro8 Max

Geekom is known for the mini PC designs, but at CES, the company has unveiled a slightly larger model that could be ideal for gamers. This comes in the form of the Geekom APro8 Max.

This PC is powered by AMD’s R9-8940HS CPU and packs a discrete GPU with the AMD Radeon 780M. This means that if you need that extra boost in graphics processing for games, video rendering/editing, or photo editing, this could come in handy.

Similar to the A7, the APro8 Max will support up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM at 5,600MHz. Users will also be able to configure its M.2 SSD storage with up to 2TB of memory, which will be more than enough for most and the use of SSDs means that users can look forward to quick and speedy data transfers and access.

In terms of ports, the PC will support 6x USB-A ports and 2x USB-C ports. As for display options, there will be 2x HDMI 2.0 with support for 4K displays, 2x DisplayPort 1.4 for 8K displays, and 2x USB-C that you can use for data transfers for adding more displays to your setup.

While the Geekom APro8 Max represents a slightly larger model than what we’re used to from the company, it is still small enough where if you want a PC capable of gaming at higher settings, this could be it.

It should be said however that the Pixel Fold is still first and foremost a smartphone, being that it comes with all the advantages of using one, as well as some downsides. In short, it’s still prone to damage, what with all the moving parts and glass involved in its design. With the V27 Pro, Vivo has seen fit to give users a great combination of hardware and affordability, making this particular handset a rather tempting choice. As with any other smartphone however it’s not perfect, but are the pros enough to outweigh the cons? Let’s find out!

Design and Display

Pick up the Vivo V27 Pro, and you’ll be forgiven should you mistake it for a flagship device – the large size and glass panels on the front and back do a great job of giving the phone that premium feel that’s all the range on more expensive handsets, even more so with the slick-feeling matte panel on our review unit. Look a bit closer though, and there are nuances that stand out.

For one, the phone’s sides are made of plastic instead of a metal frame, and this houses the volume and power buttons, SIM card slot, charging port, and speaker grille. The choice to use plastic is somewhat understandable given its mid-range pricing, although we would have loved to see a metal frame round out the phone’s glass sandwich design.

There’s also only one speaker placed on the bottom of the phone, a missed opportunity of sorts given the abundance of stereo speaker setups on midrange phones nowadays. With that being said however, the phone overall feels sturdy and feels nice during usage, and certainly feels like a well-crafted device.

There’s a curved AMOLED display which dominates the front of the device, with a 1080×2400 pixel resolution, HDR 10+, and 120Hz refresh rate. There’s little to complain about here, and as far as visual quality is concerned the V27 Pro’s screen gets the job done, and gets it done nicely. Web browsing, gaming, and scrolling through your social media feeds looks great on the phone’s display. One caveat we see however is how much a curved display is of use to you, although this is rather subjective.

Internal Specs and Software

For performance, we go back to the phone’s mid-range origins – the V27 Pro is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200, MediaTek’s go-to chipset for handsets which aren’t exactly flagship-level, but don’t skimp out on performance either. Our review unit comes with 8GB of RAM, joined by 128GB of internal storage – a commonly-seen setup on a myriad of handsets out there, but one that performs nicely nonetheless.

By “nicely,” we mean the general smoothness of day-to-day tasks such as web browsing, communication apps, and even a bit of gaming. With regards to the latter, we loaded up XCOM 2 on the V27 Pro, and the phone was able to run the game without any significant or otherwise troublesome lagging. We did notice a bit of warming up however, but not to the extent that we’ve seen with Tensor-powered Pixel devices.

The phone runs on a 4,600 mAh battery, which is enough to get most users throughout the day. We live in an age where most phones will have enough battery endurance, and unless you’re constantly gaming on the V27 Pro, we imagine that the device can keep up until nightfall.

Should you need to charge however, there’s support for 66W wired charging speeds, which really comes in handy for emergency top-ups. The phone unfortunately does not come with wireless charging, which is a shame as the glass back would have been easily able to accommodate wireless chargers.

As for software, the phone comes preloaded with Android 13, although it comes with. – you guessed it – a custom Android skin in the form of Funtouch 13, Vivo’s proprietary user interface. Coming from a Pixel 7a as my daily driver, I wasn’t a fan of the heavy skinning of Android on the V27 Pro, and could live without the added third-party bloatware.

To counter this thought however, Funtouch 13 does come with the gift of in-depth visual customization, something which Material You still needs to work on. I did appreciate the fact that I could easily change the phone’s fonts, icons, and system theme, as opposed to the more simpler approach that the Pixel phones use. There are also some additional software tricks that Vivo has included such as the ability to force apps into a full-screen mode, something that again, Google has yet to implement.

Cameras

One area in particular where the V27 Pro manages to do nicely is with photography. It’s not exactly a Pixel-eqsue level of imaging mastery, but the phone’s triple-camera setup does shine, at least in favorable conditions. The phone comes with 50MP main lens with OIS (it’s a Sony IMX766V sensor by the way), an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP super macro lens.

Photos look clean overall, especially if you’re shooting in ideal lighting conditions. Likewise, close-up shots and portrait photos are able to showcase the phone’s edge-detection capabilities, and look good for the most part.

Perhaps one area we’d have preferred to see a bit of improvement with is the front camera. There’s a 50MP main sensor in front, which manages to shoot decent quality images. There’s enough clarity to go around although saturation was a bit lacking, which was surprising to witness on a photo shot in board daylight.

For night mode, the phone manages to add a bit of exposure in otherwise darker shots, although details do turn out soft. Images are brighter than what we’ve seen on most other (non-Pixel) mid-rangers though. Video capture is impressive, at least compared to what we’ve witnessed on other Android mid-rangers; in particular, video stabilization on the V27 Pro is a treat.

Final Thoughts

At a price of around $459, the Vivo V27 Pro is a phone that gets a lot of things right. It packs good performance, a great-looking display, impressive fast-charging, and decent photographic capabilities into a good-looking package, at a cost that’s half of what you pay for with most flagships.

As we mentioned, there are some caveats though, and the lack of wireless charging and dual stereo speakers, as well as the abundance of pre-installed third-party apps might leave users thinking twice before spending their cash. But if none of these really bother you, then by all means get this phone. At the end of the day it gets the essentials right, but keep in mind that this is still a mid-range device through and through.

Modular design

Today we’ll be walking you through the process of using your scanner with your Android smartphone or tablet with the Mopria Scan app. 

A while back, we introduced you to the Mopria Print Service app from the Mopria Alliance, the group responsible for the technology behind Android’s Default Print Service. It essentially allows any Android device running on Android 8 or higher to wirelessly connect and print to more than 120 million Mopria certified products. The same team has also developed an innovative technology that allows you to scan documents and wirelessly transfer the scanned files to your Android-powered smartphone or tablet. 

Follow the instructions below to scan your documents, photos, and more with the Mopria Scan app. 

Mopria Scan requirements  

• Android smartphone or tablet 
• Mopria certified scanner or printer/scanner (check the Mopria certified products list)
• Wi-Fi network

How to use Mopria Scan App

1. Install the Mopria Scan app from the Google Play Store on an Android smartphone or tablet. 
2. Ensure your Android device and Mopria certified scanner are on the same Wi-Fi network
3. Place the document you want to scan and place it on the scanner. 
4. Open the Mopria Scan app and select the scanner from the list.
   Note: If you’re in a larger corporate office, there’s a good chance that you’ll have 4-5 or even a dozen options. If that’s the case, you can tap the star next to the scanners you use the most so that they’re always at the top of your list. 
5. Adjust the scan properties (document type, file format, color preferences, resolution, and compression level).
   Note: we recommend a minimum resolution of 300 x 300 for documents and at least 1200 x 1200 for photos. When scanning a document you can go ahead and select the document size from the drop-down, but if you’re scanning a photo, select “define on preview” then tap the preview button and then select the area you would like scanned by dragging the circles on the four corners to crop in. 
6. Once you have your area set, tap the scan button for the full-resolution scan. 

It’ll take anywhere from 2 seconds to over a minute for the file to then show up on your screen, depending on your scanner’s speed and the resolution you picked for the scan.

The default file name will be today’s date and time, but you can easily change that by tapping the pencil icon and then entering your own name for the file or photo. To save the file on your Android device, make sure to press the download button in the top bar. This will save the file to the Mopria Scan folder on your phone or tablet’s internal storage. 

If you have a printer/scanner with a document feeder, you can use it to scan multiple documents at once with the Mopria Scan app. When you select your scanner from within the app, tap the “Feeder” option from the Scan source drop-down. If you are saving the file as a PDF, you’ll be given the option to save each page into a single PDF file or have them saved individually.

Save scanned documents or photos to the cloud

To save your scanned documents or photos to your online backup cloud service of choice, after the document has been scanned, tap the “Share” option and then tap the icon for your preferred cloud service.

If you are using Google Drive, it will ask you to confirm the file name, select the account you want the file uploaded to and then pick a folder as well.

OEM VS Retail License
